The Christmas holidays begin badly for everyone when a Santa-suited Peter, Michael, Kyle, Ryan and Louis Vicontti are arrested after being mistaken for a group of Santa-dressed bank robbers. At the same time, Amanda hires the band Hanson to play at the Upstairs Jazz Club’s fund raiser for ailing children. Meanwhile, an uptight, annoying judge sentences the quarreling Michael and Jane to be with each other for the holidays. Ryan and Megan renew their relationship beginning with a weekend long bed-in together. Also, Eve turns to Kyle for help when her blackmailer threatens to tell Peter about her prison past. But Lexi finds out a connection between the man and Eve in which she makes a fuss about it, but no one seems to care.

In this two-hour episode, Kyle and Amanda travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico to visit his former Marine girlfriend, Christine, to clear up the past. But later, complications threaten Amanda and Kyle’s wedding day when Christine arrives in Los Angeles and later leaves a suicide note saying that she will leave her car in the front of a moving train, prompting Kyle to delay the ceremony to stop her. Meanwhile, Lexi’s father suddenly dies from a stroke during a heated confrontation with Peter, who tapes the argument. When Megan accidentally discovers the tape, she shows it to Lexi who immediately blames Peter for her father’s troubles and untimely death. Also, Jennifer continues to ask Billy to play her fiancé to impress her mother. When Mia eventually learns the truth about Craig’s suicide, she surprisingly takes the news very well. Following the egocentric, selfish advice from Jennifer, Samantha is encouraged to act on her feelings for Jeff who takes her out to dinner. Michael also asks Mia for financing after a patient, a gang member named Spider, suggests opening a free clinic in his South-Central neighborhood, which turns out to be a front for Spider to use the clinic for his gang banger war.

After taking a punch from Billy, a frustrated Jake hits the road and ends up in a small town visiting his former girlfriend Colleen and her eight-year-old son. Back in Los Angeles, Alison has Billy as company when she hears her unborn baby’s heartbeat. Meanwhile, Carter, wanting to get away from his solitude life, moves in with Sydney and begins looking for a new job and finds one… in Kyle’s restaurant. Michael’s personal care for Kimberly works wonders for her when they learn that her brain tumor is shrinking, but it has Megan wondering if she and Michael are finished. Peter finally starts a romance with Taylor, while a revenge-seeking Craig meets with Nick and hires him to spy on Peter, hoping to find out what he’s up to in order to break Peter and Amanda up.

Alycia Barnett returns as Bobby’s lawyer where Peter flirts with her wanting to invest in Bobby’s TV cable company. Jake looks after Jane and a renewed attraction between them develops. Jo and Richard ask Jane to return to Hart-Mancini after she saves a major client from leaving, but she refuses and decides to start her own design business. Meanwhile, Billy has had enough of Brooke’s hysterics both at home and at work, in which he throws her out of his apartment and files for divorce. Anxious to find out what Kimberly is up to, Michael gives her a shot of truth serum where she tells him that it was Sydney who poisoned Jane, in which Sydney moves out of his beach house for good. Matt feels uncomfortable about Alan being a ladies man in his acting career and spends time with David Erikson, the hospital’s new Social Services person. Also, Vince Parezi arrives in Los Angeles and again tells Bobby to carry out his order to kill Amanda. When Bobby refuses, Vince and his thugs end up taking Bobby and Amanda hostage where Vince again threatens Bobby to kill Amanda or he will kill Bobby instead.

Rikki and Martin convince Sydney to leave Melrose and come live with them at their desert retreat which turns out to be a polygamous religious cult. When Sydney decides to leave, they lock her up against her will. Meanwhile, Michael convinces Amanda, after another diagnosis, that she has Hodgkin’s disease (lymph cancer). Amanda wants to keep her condition a secret and ignores Michael’s request that she reduce her workload. Detective Jonathan Rawlings, a gay cop, questions Matt about his beating and when Matt tells him of his suspicions about Kimberly, Rawlings shows his true colors when he physically threatens her.

Michael tries to make up with Jane, but he gets a restraining order against his phone calls to her and he starts becoming addicted to his painkiller pills. Eventually, Sydney finds him unconscious on the floor of his house after taking an overdose of pills. Meanwhile, Reed finally buys his boat with financial help from Amanda, with Jake as a mechanic, while Jo suspects something wrong about Reed. After wining the editing contest, Billy gets a big promotion for a editing job in New York City and wants Alison to come with him, but she wants to stay in Los Angeles. Also, Matt confronts Jeffrey and they decide to change his life for the better.
