As Valentine’s Day approaches, Kyle and Ryan’s domineering and militant father, Mack, arrives in town for a visit for Kyle’s birthday where he soon causes trouble for both of his sons during a dinner with them and Amanda and Megan. Meanwhile, Jane throws Michael out of the apartment after finding out about the sexual harassment charges against him after a confrontation with Audrey. Peter suspends Michael, while the rest of the hospital staff refuses to support Michael in his lawsuit knowing of his past reputation. Lexi continues to pressure Megan to find her soul mate, and she eventually discovers who is her perfect match: Ryan. Also, Peter objects to Eve leaving town with the Jazz Club band for a gig in San Francisco. At the end, Michael secretly meets with his secret lover/partner in crime, Audrey, and congratulates her for a job well done.

Both Samantha and Billy feel guilty over their flings with Jeff Baylor and Jennifer. But lust throws them off again when Jeff (who’s now obsessed with Samantha) pressures her to leave Billy, and Jennifer tells her the same thing. Meanwhile, Amanda continues to blame herself for Christine’s death and rejects Kyle’s efforts to reconcile, while she begins to lash out at everyone around her. Peter surprises Lexi by showing her a new high rise condo for them to live in which puts a crimp in their reconciliation. Cooper makes a plan for Megan and himself to start anew when he tells her that he has been considering a job offer in Philadelphia. Also, Michael lets Taylor hide out at his beach front house for a few days, and advises her to continue to deny any involvement with Christine after Kyle receives a cryptic note from Nick about Taylor’s "death," which sets him off to investigate who really was Christine.

Megan’s life suffers more when she is evicted from her own house after word spreads of her arrest (and past life), not wanting to ruin his reputation at the hospital anymore. Meanwhile, Chelsea stays with Matt at his place where she proves too much for him to handle. An eccentric customer sues both Sydney and Samantha after injuring herself at the boutique shop when a display falls on her, courtesy of Sydney’s carelessness. Word gets out about Taylor’s affair and past history with Peter after Alison overhears an argument between her and Kyle. Kyle’s brief affair with Sydney sets off a chain of events among the tenants.

After Alison wins the advertising contest, she’s appointed as president of D&D, ousting Amanda. But unable to keep up with the frantic work schedule, Alison immediately adopts Amanda’s ruthless and aggressive attitude which surprises even Billy when Alison seduces him and then discards him the morning after. Meanwhile, Michael decides to sue the city for $250,000 in matters of his road accident from Kimberly, so he sends her to another town and invites a very sickly and vulnerable Amanda over at the beach house to care for her and even has her pose as his wife to a visiting insurance agent. Jake and Jo travel to his home town in Washington state for his mother’s funeral where they meet his older half-brother Jess, an auto mechanic who’s still angry and bitter at Jake ever since he ran away from home at age 15 without saying a word, leaving Jess to care for their drunkard mother.

After Amanda points out to Alison that her engagement ring is quite cheep, she and Billy go shopping for a real diamond ring. Jo realizes that she’s pregnant with Reed’s baby and considers whether or not to have an abortion, while Jake cancels out on a dinner date with Amanda to be with Jo. Meanwhile, Sydney plans hers and Michael’s wedding by mailing invitations, gets into a fistfight with Jane over wearing her old wedding dress and scorns her mother who tries to talk her out of it. At the ceremony on the beach, Matt is the best man (and the only one in attendance) while Michael decides to murder Sydney afterwords to shut her up permanently.

Meanwhile, Jake is laid off when the motorcycle repair shop he works in goes out of business. He looks into buying the shop for himself when Jo offers to help him buy the place with her divorce settlement money.
